Medieval festivals in Brittany

Each year various towns within Brittany celebrate there historic past by holding Medieval festivals for all to enjoy.

This year it was the turn of Vannes, Hennebont and Malestroit all located within the Morbihan region of Brittany.

The Morbihan region was created during the French revolution in March 1790, it was one of the original 83 departments created and is named after the Breton word for small sea which is the principal feature of the coastline.

Each town is steeped in history with Medieval buildings still standing, Vannes with its walled inner city with ramparts, watch towers and the gated entrances protecting its 14th century cathedral is a joy to walk around and was founded over 2000 years ago.The inner walled city is filled with cafe's and restaurants to enjoy eating alfresco out on the cobbled streets.

Hennebont with its fortifications over looking and protecting the river Blavet still has traces of its medieval ramparts dating from the 13th to 15th centuries as well as a large fortified 15th century gatehouse complete with double-doors with drawbridge slots.

During the festivals the towns are covered with Medieval banners fluttering in the wind as hundreds of locals dress up in Medieval costume depicting what life was like several hundred years ago. From knights in Amour, nobility, tradesmen,peasants and court jesters the grand parades are truly wonderful to watch.

In addition to the grand parades that march through the centres of the towns there are exhibitions of sword play,jousting and the various trades of past times.

Spit roast can also be sampled along with breads made in medieval ways and there are many stalls selling Medieval costumes,medieval board games, replica armour and weapons.
